Meet H.E. Marcy Grossman, the UAE’s next Unicorn…

By Beth Hirshfeld

Her Excellency Marcy Grossman, lives by the mantra, “If you can see it, you can be it.”  And that couldn’t be truer of her career.

With 28 years in the Canadian public service, H.E. Marcy Grossman brings some impressive credentials and experience to her new position as Consul General of Canada in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

A criminal psychologist by training who worked in federal corrections, Ms. Grossman successfully lateralled into Global Affairs Canada in 2001 and felt an instant connection, realizing international business was part of her DNA.

With 15 impressive years as Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner in some of the USA’s biggest trade markets – Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles and Denver – Ms. Grossman has shown her passion for, and ability to execute, trade deals.  One of her proudest achievements, for example, was her pivotal role in securing Dell’s substantial investment into Canada, which included creating thousands of jobs.

A couple of months into Dubai life, Ms. Grossman is quickly starting to feel at home and sees the UAE as a natural choice for her and her skill set.  At ease with the UAE’s business-friendly environment and transactional focus that feels similar to her experience in America, Ms. Grossman sees great opportunity for the Canada-UAE trade relationship because of the two countries’ similar economies and synergies.  She also welcomes the strong social connections between Canada and the UAE including their commitments to diversity, gender equality, culture and quality of life.

Ms. Grossman is impressed with the work of the Canadian Consulate team and her predecessor H.E. Emmanuel Kamarianakis in fostering trade between the two countries, and is looking forward to building on that good work to take the team and the Canada-UAE relationship to the next level.  Believing strongly in action and results, she is also eager to meet the Canadian professionals and companies in the region and meaningfully support companies to grow business between Canada and the UAE.

To that end, Ms. Grossman wants to ensure Canadians understand what the Consulate General and the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) can do to support Canadian companies in the region.  With trade commissioners covering a variety of sectors, TCS offers Canadian companies help with warm introductions and business connections, information and advice, and business events to support their business development.  To reach TCS, Canadian companies are encouraged to reach out to Kate Starkey, Senior Trade Commissioner, at uae-eau.infocentre@international.gc.ca

Looking through Her Excellency’s active twitter feed (@MarcyGrossman), unicorns is a common theme.  Unicorns, Ms. Grossman says, are unique people - one in a million.  And if you find them, you must treasure them.  Ms. Grossman has been lucky to work with unicorns and, with her ability to turn ideas into results and make vision a reality, it is very possible we might just have found our own unicorn in Consul General Grossman.
